Questions from and responses to citizens:

Q: What are the laws regarding having farm animals as pets?

PDFPrintE-mail

From Adam Nusbaum:

I would like to know what the policies and laws are on owning farm animals as pets and if any, which ones are you allowed to have?

Thank you for your time.

The Hampton City Code regulates generally the keeping of companion animals (what people refer to as “pets”). City and state code have identical definitions of “companion animal”.

The definition specifically excludes agricultural animals which are defined as “livestock” and “poultry”. “Livestock” would include cows, pigs, horses, etc. and “poultry” would include chickens, turkeys, etc. These types of animals are commonly thought of as “farm animals”.

Chapter 5, Article II of the City Code addresses the keeping of “agricultural animals”. Such animals may not be kept within 175 feet of a residential building or within 250 feet of any church or school building. Zoning laws may also apply depending on the type of agricultural animal.

Thanks for your question.
