Questions from and responses to citizens:

Q: Why does this particular job require two city workers?

From John Swaren:

I pay taxes for the city and understand the need for them. I also understand the poor economy requires the city to watch every penny and attempt to save money in all places. Yet this morning while walking I noted a Hampton van stop and two men dismount. One man had a hook which he used to remove a manhole cover. The other man lowered a pole into the open hole to make some form of check. He removed the pole, the first man closed the manhole and the two of them got back in the truck and rode to another manhole where they repeated the drill.

Question: Why two men? Fire one right now and save some money.

The crew you're referencing is our Wastewater survey crew who are collecting manhole rim and invert pipe elevations for our GIS mapping system for both our internal use as well as to used for system modeling as part of our consent order requirements.

A two man crew can collect significantly more data in a day than a one man crew and a two man crew also provides an element of safety as manhole locations and traffic volumes differ from street to street.
