From
Flora J. Randall,
Secretary, Northampton Civic League

Do you remember when Todd’s Lane and Big Bethel Road in the Northampton area of Hampton were merely dusty and somewhat rough dirt roads? How about when most of the surrounding area near these roads was still rural and cows, horses and chickens roamed freely as a normal part of the landscape?

If you can actually remember a Northampton like this (or know someone who can), or grew up here or have lived here for many years; or owned and or worked in a local business; or have belonged for a while to one of the local churches, organizations, or schools  - then members of the Northampton Civic League (NHCL) want to talk to you.

nh_subdivisionsEven if the changes you’ve seen haven’t been this dramatic, we’re still interested in your perspective on how our Northampton community is different from how it used to be.

This year the City of Hampton is celebrating its 400th Anniversary. As part of the celebration, the NHCL was awarded a small grant by the Neighborhood Commission to assist in the creation of an album entitled “Northampton Times” with historical information relating to the Northampton Area of the City of Hampton.

How can you help?

* Share your memories of the early history or important events in Northampton.

* Let NHCL scan photographs or documents you may have or may have access to.

* If you have videos or movies of your own, the NHCL will try to copy and include them.

* Help NHCL to identify and contact other people who may have items or memories to share.

The Northampton Times album will be a bound volume of photographs, written histories, remembrances, and scanned documents. The album will be  accompanied with a DVD with video, audio interviews and additional photographs.

The Northampton Times website (http://northamptontimes.net) also has other selected content for browsing.

The NHCL is asking for help and participation from people with photographs, documents, and memories to share.  All materials will be scanned and returned promptly. Video and audio interviews (typically 30-45 minutes in length) will be scheduled at your convenience. The NHCL also will accept written submissions.

All submissions and interviews will be credited to you in the album, DVD, or web site. We'll ask that you sign a release giving us permission to use whatever you provide. The NHCL can’t guarantee that everything submitted will be used, but we will try to include as much as possible.

Near the end of the year, copies of the album should be available at the Main and Northampton Libraries, the Hampton History Museum, and through the Hampton 400th Anniversary Committee.
